~Full Stage Lights In~
Joey and Jiayu’s commit suicide scene. Reenact later in scene 6. * Note: Joey is sitting on wheelchair.
(Joey and Jiayu holding onto sleeping pill bottle.)

[Tone of Joey and Jiayu: Solemn, Miserable]

Joey: This world so unfair.

Jiayu: This world is so unfair.

Joey: I’ve always waited for this chance.

Jiayu: I’ve always done what you’ve asked me to.

Joey: Why must you do this to my legs!

Jiayu: Why must you always ask for more!

Joey: There is no point in living if I can’t continue dancing.

Jiayu: I’ve had enough

Joey: I’ve had enough

Joey and Jiayu swallow pills. In pain. Faints.

Scene 2
~Lights center in to stage center~
Introduction to mum’s disapproval to Joey dancing. Starts the story but directly addressing the problem. Joey seems a bit rebellious here. *Note: En Ning is carrying a bag, maybe with ipod in her hand.
(Mum is looking through the bills, Joey preparing to go for dance class, Dad reading newspaper on the sofa.)

[Tone: Mum is hysterical, Joey nonchalant and rebellious, Dad exasperated]

Mum: (Joey walks pass nonchalantly) Where do you think you’re going?!

Joey: -silent- (Ignores, sits down to tie shoelaces)

Mum: I’m asking you a question! Are you a mute?

Joey: -silent- (continues tying shoelaces)

Mum: ANSWER ME!

Dad: (Looks up exasperatedly) Don’t be so worked up…Just let her go…she’s old enough.

Joey: (Ignores Dad, rolls her eyes) Aren’t you asking the obvious? You know the answer, so what’s the point of asking? Yes, I’m going for dance lesson, so? (Turns towards doorway, prepares to leave)

Mum: (storms towards door and blocks doorway) You jolly well know that you are not allowed to go, why can’t you just be a little bit more like your sister?

Joey: And why can’t you just accept the fact that I like dance, I love dance and dance is my passion! Why don’t you just give me more support and let me go?

Dad: Exactly, why are you stopping her?

Mum: Why? Simply because I don’t want her to end up like her “best friend”… You see how she dresses, how she talks, she’s… she’s… just unacceptable. I don’t want her to end up like, like…

-En Ning appears at the door-

En Ning: Eh joey are you done?

Mum: That! (points vigorously at En Ning) You just look at her! Look at her!

Joey: -to En Ning- Lets go. (pulls En Ning away and walks off)

Mum: COME BACK!


Scene 3
~Light shifts to stage right~
Kah Hui pats Jiayu and say hi. Jiayu wince. Kah Hui finds out Jiayu has been beaten by her mum again because of her results. Intro to second problem. Mum being too overbearing Jiayu, in contrast to Joey is more submissive. Note: Jiayu is wearing a jacket.
(Kah Hui comes in from behind, sees Jiayu and walks up to her.)
{Props: School Table (set), School Chair (set), Jacket for Jiayu}
[Tone: Kah Hui is incredulous, Jiayu is submissive]

Kah Hui: Hey!

Jiayu: (winces) oww…(under her breath)

Kah Hui: Oops…did I hit you too hard? Sorry…

Jiayu: No, its not you.

Kah Hui: -Realization- Don’t tell me…you (pulls up the sleeve of Jia yu’s jacket)

Jiayu: (winces again)
Kah Hui: You were caned again?! And what is it this time? (Incredulous look) Because you got second in class?!

Jiayu: Stop it…don’t worry about me. My mum just wants me to get better results.

Kah Hui: What?! You’re not asking me to believe what you just said…and you’re asking me not to worry?!


Scene 4
~Lights shift to stage left~
Amanda talking to Yee Khoon, telling her she will definitely get the lead role in the performance and beat Joey. Joey and En Ning appear. Joey is discussing with En Ning about her getting the lead role. Amanda hears, doesn’t believe, snatches letter. Amanda is jealous and causes Joey to fall and become paralysed. This scene shows us moving on with the occurrence of further, more serious problems that will slowly lead the play to the end.
(Amanda and Yee Khoon in dancing costumes, discussing while warming up. Joey walks in with a letter of acceptance for the lead role, together with En Ning)
{Props: Paper as letter of acceptance, Joey’s bag, En Ning’s bag}
[Tone: Amanda is arrogant at first, changes to jealous and mean after. Yee Khoon is sucking up. Joey is ecstatic and uncertain about her ability. En Ning is glad for her friend]

Yee Khoon: Hah! It’s already so late yet she is still not here. (Sniggers) She’s not even putting in effort. Amanda, sure pass one lor…

Amanda: Obviously…There’s not even a doubt that she will not get the role. I mean, look at her! She eats carbs for crying out loud!

Yee Khoon: Exactly…don’t worry Amanda. The role is definitely yours. (Smiles sucking up)

Amanda: Worry?! What a Joke! I’ve never for once seen her as an opponent.

Yee Khoon: Ya…you are so (exaggerates) much better than her.

-En Ning and Joey appears-

Joey: (Holding on letter of acceptance, very excited) I can’t believe it! I actually got the role! En Ning!

En Ning: (Heartwarming smile) Congratulations for finally getting what you want! It’s good that you’ve finally achieved your dream after so much hard work.

Joey: Thanks. Oh I can feel excitement coursing through my veins! I can’t wait for it!

-As they talk, Amanda overhears and has a shocked look. She does not believe it, breaks away from what she is doing and walks up to confront Joey. Yee Khoon follows closely behind Amanda-

Amanda: What?! (Snatches the paper from Joey roughly, stares at it in shock)

Yee Khoon: This is impossible! She must have done something! She doesn’t even deserve it!

Joey: (En Ning is behind Joey, looks incredulously and threateningly at Amanda and Yee Khoon) Hey! Give it back! (Reaches forward and snatches the paper back from Amanda, walks away from them with En Ning, puts down bag and prepares for warm up)

-Amanda’s hand continues to linger in the air. She stunns momentarily but suddenly, expression changes, smirks and turns to Joey. Yee Khoon follows behind, also has a smirk (Stuck up) and walks behind Amanda-

-Amanda walks threateningly towards Joey, holds out her hand for handshake-

Amanda: Hey, congratulations for getting the role. (Cold edge to her voice, scary)

-Joey reaches out to take hand hesitantly, just as their hands are about to touch; Amanda takes away her hands and moves to give Joey a hug (very fake)-

Amanda: It is good that you’ve finally got the role. We all know you’ve worked very hard. But you know…(Amanda moves away from hug) Somehow…I think I am a better dancer than you (Pushes Joey to the ground with force simultaneously)

En Ning: Joey!

-En Ning moves forward to help Joey. Joey is shocked and lands hard on the ground. Contact at tailbone. Writhing in pain-
-Yee Khoon covers her mouth with her hand. She didn’t expect Amanda to do things so fiercely-
-Amanda sneers and walks off-


Scene 5
~Lights center in to stage center~
Mum’s friend brags to mum about how good her child is. Mum envies. Jiayu appears with Kah Hui, Mum’s friend leaves with Kah Hui. Mum beats Jiayu for not getting good results. Jiayu cries. Dad at this time comes home with Joey in wheelchair. Tries to stop but in vain. Story plots advances more, going into the end of play.
(Yong Hui is invited to Cassmain’s house for tea. They chat about their children.)
{Props: Sofa (set), Table (set), Chairs (set), Tea drinking set, Yong Hui’s bag, Joey’s wheelchair, Kah Hui’s school bag, Jiayu’s school bag.}
[Tone: Yong Hui brags, Cassmain is embarrassed, Jiayu is scared and sad, Dad is exasperated and helpless]

Yong Hui: (Pretentiously) Eh how did your daughter do in the last exam ah?

Mum: (Embarrassed) My daughter… got second in class.

Yong Hui: Oh…(very fake) my daughter got first in class, but it’s not surprising. She gets first the class every year…

Mum: (embarrassed) My daughter, unlike yours, is always second.

Yong Hui: Aiya, not everybody can be so smart, it depends on how much effort the child and the parent puts in.

Mum: True. I should, and will get my daughter to study more and work harder. (Bristling with anger)

Yong Hui: Sometimes, these things just can’t be forced. It requires natural talents as well as family background.

-Sips cup of tea, Cassmain keeps her head down and keeps silent-

Yong Hui: I guess I should be going. I need to prepare dinner for my children. Children need a lot of nuitrients to be smart you know…(Acts bitchy)

Mum: Okay, have a good day ahead. Bye.

-Walks towards door, opens door, Jiayu & Kah Hui at the door. Cassmain glares at Jiayu. Jiayu retreats and looks scared-

Yong Hui: Oh Kah Hui my dear daughter, since you’re here lets go back together.

Mum: *fakes smile* Ok, Bye!

-Close door as Jiayu comes in, expression change immediately, grabs a hanger-

Mum: How dare you get only second in class! (whacks) Look at Kah Hui, she’s doing so much better than you. I don’t understand why! You’re such a letdown.

Jiayu: (simultaneously)*cries while screaming* sorry ma, ouch, sorry ma, I will try harder next time, please ma please stop, I will try my best the next time!

Mum: You say that all the time, but when did you really try your best, every time you’re just a disappointment (throws hanger down)

-Jiayu curls up and cry-

Mum: Why do I have such a useless kid like you! You’ve never ever lived up to my expectations. (Breathes heavily, stands and bristles with anger as Jiayu squats on the ground)

-Dad comes back with Joey on wheel chair sees situation-

Dad: -to Joey- Don’t think about it anymore, go to your room and rest well. (turn and look at JY, quickly help her up)

Dad: Why did you beat her again!

Mum: -to Joey- You are another useless one! I told you not to go for dance lesson, look what it has done to you! Stupid girl! (screams) Why are all my children so useless!


Scene 6
~Lights in full stage~
This is the part of resolution of the play. Now, all the forces that are working against and for the two main characters come out. Basically, everyone involved in the play is put into this part and repeats their lines continuously. The pressure is supposed to build up and everyone must close in on the two main characters, pressuring them till they can’t take it anymore. Scene one is then reenacted.
(Joey and Jiayu will bring out the pills after they appear from the crowd, they must show expressions of extreme suppression and misery)

[Tone: Miserable, everyone should be in their own voices from before]

-Everyone speaks simultaneously. Stage should be in a mess and chaos. As they speak they crowd around the respective characters-
**the first speaks first then soften volume, then second one speaks, first person continue repeating but softer so that second person can be heard, after last person speaks, everyone starts speaking in normal voice, stage in mess and chaos.
TO JIAYU:

Yong Hui: Hah so useless, my daughter is so much smarter, no wonder your mum is so embarrassed, such a useless child…(moves towards Jiayu)

Kah Hui: How can you ask me not to worry! Your mum keeps beating you. You’ve got so many bruises. (Moves towards Jiayu)

Jiayu: Stop it! Stop it! (Covers her head, curls up and starts to squat)

TO JOEY:

Amanda: How dare you compete with me? It is your entire fault! You landed me in this state. Now I have no school and I cannot continue dancing! It is al because of you! This is your retribution!

Yee Khoon: You should have known better than to compete with Amanda. She’s so much better than you! You can never bear her!

En Ning: You still have me. Don’t worry. Everything will be okay.

Joey: stop it! Stop it!

Cassmain (Mum): Why are you two so lousy, why can’t my children be smart, and good. Why is life so unfair? You two have brought misery to my life! I don’t want useless children!

Keng Fang (Dad): Stop forcing them… Stop forcing them…

Joey and Jiayu: STOP IT!!!

-Everybody else freeze. Joey and Jiayu emerge from the crowd. Joey on wheelchair-

Joey: This world so unfair.

Jiayu: This world is so unfair.

Joey: I’ve always waited for this chance.

Jiayu: I’ve always done what you’ve asked me to.

Joey: Why must you do this to my legs!

Jiayu: Why must you always ask for more!

End of play. Mum shows deep regret. Nothing left for her.
